The Last Orange
It holds the whole kitchen in a small gold hour,
alone in the bowl that used to mean plenty.
The knife waits. The window does its winter work.
Peel would perfume the room like a brief country.
I leave it there another day, a planet on the counter,
bright enough to argue with the dusk.
Some sweetness is a kind of patience.
Some patience is a kind of feast.
