Windowsill Orchid

It learned the apartment’s weather before I did:
which pane gets the late light, which draft is honest.

For months it kept a green and private counsel.
Then, without announcement, a pale throat opened.

I water it the way you keep a promise
you made to someone who cannot thank you.

Winter comes and goes. The bloom remains a rumor
of patience, perched above the sink.
